Rabbits, guinea pigs, chinchillas, rats, mice, hamsters, gerbils, and degus have teeth that are constantly growing and if left unchecked, will impact their ability to eat and
ultimately affect their long-term health. Chewing is a natural behaviour that keeps
your pet entertained along with combating any stress or anxiety they face. Since it’s a part of their nature, why not add an additional benefit to it? Chewing on edible toys (Enrichment Treats as we like to call them), such as any of our Wood Chew Sticks,
helps your small pet wear down their incisors. It also helps to keep molar spurs from forming inside the mouth of rabbits, guinea pigs, and chinchillas.

Molar spurs are a medical condition that form on your small pet’s teeth that can end up cutting their tongue, cheeks, and other soft mouth tissues. The presence of a molar spur will have your small pet avoiding the use of that particular tooth, which causes unnatural pressure on other teeth, making the uneven wear even worse. It will cause discomfort when eating, the misalignment of the jaw can cause other problems with jaw muscles and ligaments. It’s extremely important, that if your rabbit, guinea pig, or chinchilla is currently eating soft hay, that you add chew toys into their daily routine.

Commons syptoms include:

  • Drooling
  • Changes in food preference (especially, but not always, from harder to softer foods or to a few preferred foods)
  • Showing interest in food but not eating or eating only small amounts
  • Weight loss
  • Swelling or pain at the jaw line, under the chin or in the cheek
  • Bad odour from the mouth
  • Runny Eyes
  • Grinding teeth
  • Reclusive or grumpy behaviour

If you notice your small pet with any of these symptoms, you should always get in contact with your vet to make sure they are 100% happy & healthy!

Here at Bunny Bistro we believe that all rabbits should be happy, and a healthy bunny is a happy one! To keep them as healthy as possible it is down to us owners to make sure that we meet all thier needs. We have come up with a simple step by step plan for you to check off, that way you know that you are doing the best you can for your fluffy friends!

  • 1 - It's a simple one, make sure clean, fresh drinking water is ALWAYS available
  • 2 - Make sure that you have a good quality dust extracted hay available at all times, don't worry about them overeatting, your bunny is smarter than they look, as they will only eat what thier body needs!
  • 3 - Feeding a good quality feed pellet such as our Hypoallergenic Rabbit Pellets will ensure complete nutrition as well as added vitamins and minerals to help with digestive health, urinary tract health as well as skin & coat health!
  • 4 - Provide natural treats & forage for added fibre, as well as interaction & general wellbeing
  • 5 - Offering small amounts of fresh greens daily will add variety & enrichment to thier diet
  • 6 - SPACE, we all know how important stretching your legs is, so make sure you offer your bunny as much space as possible, at a minimum your bunny should be able to hop 3-4 times, stand up fully, lie down and stretch out. Try letting your bunny have a hop around your garden (if Bunny Safe)

If you ask your bunnies, they will say there is no such thing as too much forage! For the most part they are correct, you can feed your bunnies as much natural forage as they will eat, we recommend mixing handfuls in with their hay as well as giving handfuls throughout the day. There are certain scenarios where you should limit forage, for example if your rabbit is overweight you should limit forage that is high in protein & sugars.

As our forage is 100% natural, the appearance can change from batch to batch, but don't worry, nutritionally it will be exactly the same! Obviously if there is a big difference please get in contact with us and we can double check our stock to make sure you have recieved the correct product.
